Salvaged steel, granite, inflatables
20 x 20 x 55 feet
Inspired by Japanese bonsai and the industrial aesthetics of the 1920s, “Bonsai Baum” reflects the era of the Great Depression and the onset of the Industrial Revolution. Crafted from salvaged steel and hardware for their historical and visual impact, the sculpture reimagines a traditional bonsai planter. Constructed from weathered steel and fastened with hot rivets, it evokes the industrial architecture of the time. A dozen granite boulders support the bonsai trunk, which is adorned with a bronze mirror and glass mosaic. The trunk branches into three large inflatables, reminiscent of airships and Mylar balloons, offering a modern take on the bonsai’s organic foliage. “Bonsai Baum” invites viewers to explore the interplay between historical and contemporary elements, scale, and space, showcasing Feral Studio’s innovative blend of past craftsmanship with a forward-looking artistic vision. The sculpture serves as a striking dialogue between tradition and modernity, challenging perceptions and inspiring reflection on the evolution of artistic expression.
